The Bell Curve Lamp

The Bell Curve Lamp was created as part of a series of designs merging the craft of glass-blowing with a modern approach to sustainable lighting design. The shape and the composition of the glass were selected to allow for a wide variety of lighting conditions. A mixture of clear and opaque white glasses were gathered so that we could create a range from the more diffuse glow through the areas with higher concentrations of white glass to a more directed light in those areas along the edges with more clear glass.

While the lamp was created to receive a compact-fluorescent light bulb, the design allowed for the replacement of the fixture as new lighting technologies came along. Once the bubble was opened, the glass was spun open into the shape of the bell. Then, the lower lip of the lamp was selectively curled up. The curvature of the lip and the asymmetrical shape allow for a variety of positions suitable for different lighting tasks.

This project was done in collaboration with Sam Brissette and Laurence Sarrazin.
