For his installation “Against Nature” at the Sunroom Project Space at Wave Hill, artist Alan Ruiz wanted to construct a system of alternating layers of standard steel studs. Set in front of the large arched windows of the Sunroom, the upright vertical channels needed to be carefully arranged. The CNC router was used to develop the profile shape for each of the different channel sizes that would allow for assembly on-site, but that would still be deep enough to help keep the stud upright. The CNC router was then used to cut a track out of 1″ thick MDF panels that would rest on the floor of the space and serve as the support for the channels. Through his installation Ruiz is able to extract the steel stud both from the wall as well as its typical structural role, creating both a sculptural object as well as a screen regulating the passage of light into and across the space.
Final assembly and installation were done by the artist. Images of final installation provided by Alan Ruiz.
